Serious Textures with Golden Artist Colour Gels, Mediums and Additives: Our Mixed-Media Attempts with Amy Shawley

Amy Shawley - she's simply lovely and chatty … well, she's a bit like me. Heck, a lot like me {yet opposite in the alike way} with a moody cat that bonded with moody me instantaneously.

OK - what I meant by opposite but alike is for instance:
she lives in a basement apartment in the artsy part of Downtown LA; I used to life in a loft apartment in the artsy-bohemian part of Melbourne;
I had a clingy Russian speaking cat that couldn't put on weight, she has a moody get-me-out-of-here cat that's well, well endowed; and
we love travels - though nobody in our family bothers {and gets bored} with our travel tales.

So whilst our hands got busy {and coloured!} we chatted endlessly about her travels and recent trip to Machu Picchu in between sips of instant coffee she had made for us - a relief for Val who was trying very hard to keep awake - we attempted to make some cool textures.

And by that I mean really fierce textures created with Acrylics! Golden Artist Color acrylic products more like it - you know, the gels, mediums and additives.

So, after hearing so much about 'skins' and seeing huge 'skins' being exhibited at the Golden Artist Color HQ in New Berlin, New York … and yet more drying in the Golden Artist Color barn that houses artist in residence {foundation for artists} … I got on to make my own 'skin'.

Since it takes time to dry, we went about removing the 'skins' Amy had created earlier for her own masterpieces. The holes (that were deliberately created) gave some comic relieve to the late night class, in addition to its real purpose.

With 'skins' out of the way, we went about experimenting with "encaustic" painting without the need to shave and heat wax - ala acrylic style, once again using the various medium, gels and additives Golden Artist Color has to offer.

This was truly an eye opening session for both Val and I.
Acrylic is not just paint! or materials used by long dead master artists hanging in stuffy uppity art museums.
